Spam
SPAM is the plague of email systems worldwide. Spam is unsolicited junk email sent to as many people as possible, typically advertising some product or another. Currently mail systems the world over are being flooded by spam. People are turning to software which tries to detect spam and filter it out before it gets to you. Such programs have varying degrees of success; they are never 100% effective and can filter out emails you want to receive. (My daily Dilbert emails stopped appearing in my work email shortly after my employer implemented such software. I checked and Dilbert.com are still sending the emails but they never arrive in my inbox. Sigh.)
How do spammers get hold of your email? Sources include web sites where you've entered your email address and they publish them(!), emails lists you've signed up to and where unscrupulous list owners have sold the list to spammers, or where you have a nice easy to guess email address and they just guessed right.
So what should you do about Spam? Avoid it of course. How? By being careful with your email address. See the Email page for my patented system for keeping your email address safe while still being able to sign up for newsletters, newsgroups etc.
